Thonet

The name Thonet represents high-quality, innovative, and elegant furniture.

Michael Thonet opened his own furniture workshop in Boppard am Rhein in 1819. The development of the legendary Viennese coffee house chair No. 14 (now 214) marked its breakthrough in 1859. He was able to elasticise long wooden rods using steam pressure and then mould them into the proper shape. His bentwood furniture laid the foundation for industrial production. No fewer than 50 million copies of the famous No. 14 chair were sold by 1930 alone.

After 1930, Thonet engaged in the production of tubular steel furniture designed by the famous Bauhaus architects Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer. The company grew into a world leader, producing numerous models designed in-house in addition to designs by architects. Thonet is a family business, with the fifth generation at the helm today.

Designcollectors has a large stock of Thonet furniture, including the bentwood chairs 209 and 214, the Lounge Chair S35 by Marcel Breuer, and the S40 garden furniture by Mart Stam.
